:: Reminiscing times... ::

The rain went pitter-patter outside, and it reminded me of the good old days in Jordan.
Aaah yes! The dating days. *smiles dreamily*

We've been craving for arab food these past few weeks.
Maqali.
Hummus bil lahm.
Shawarma.
Mansaf.
Kibseh.
Maqluba.

A couple of weeks ago, we ate this.

Lebanese bread spread with hummus, and stuffed with fried potatoes,
eggplants & cauliflower. A.K.A : MAQALI.
This used to be our favorite, bought on a small restaurant
at the bus station in Mafraq, each time before we board the
bus back to Irbed where we stayed.

That left us wanting for more and led us to this last wednesday.

I tried cooking this before, but it didn't taste the same like the one we had in Jordan.
I think it was because I didn't add in any BAHARAT (arab spices) as I couldn't find it here.
Didn't blog about it of course back then, because I didn't even have a blog :D

This time, I included the BAHARAT into the recipe.
I googled the Baharat recipe here, went to Jusco, grabbed all the spices needed, proceeded to the counter (where the cashier shot a very funny look at me & the amount of spices that I bought), went back home & started making my own bottle of BAHARAT.

I tell you, it was worth it.

The aroma, the taste..it was exactly the same.
Zali & I had our dinner quite late that night because he had to stay back in the office until 9+.
So, when he reached home, Hawra was already sound asleep.
We had our dinner with the rain pouring heavily outside.
It was perfect.
The atmosphere, the food, US..it was Jordan all over again.

It was Jordan enough for us, suffice to say.

Wahlaaauuu so romantic! (don't puke hor! :p)

:: The Italian (cooking) Job ::

Il pomeriggio buono belle persone ^_^
Oh il mio dio! Non posso credere che parlo in italiano!

La ricetta di olio di aglio è perfetta!

I cooked this wonderful recipe for dinner last night.

Full credit goes to Delina dear.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful recipe. *hugs*
Your recipe got me speaking Italian, babe! kwakwakwa

You were right, it is so simple to cook, & I spent about one hour, more or less, in the kitchen. Even Hubs was impressed, saying,"Eh? Dah siap? Cepatnya!"
And it is more flavorful than the usual authentic Italian Aglio Olio! Thanks for the tips, hor!

At first, I was a bit worried.
You see, Hubs isn't the type who digs into Italian food, other than the occasional Pizzas, Lasagnas & Spaghetti Bolognaise. He's more into "hot-n-spicy-sambal food", see?
I was worried that the food would be ' tak laku '.

So, you can imagine my pleasure seeing him not only eating the aglio olio (dengan penuh semangat, you!), but helping himself to 2nd & 3rd helpings! I was smiling from ear to ear. Heeee...

When I asked, "So how? Sedap tak?", he managed to nod vigorously. lol ^_^
And in between bites, came words of compliments like, "MmmmMm".. "Sedapnya".."Very good" etc.

I sticked truly to Delina's recipe, except for black peppers & red bell peppers.
1)I didn't add in red bell peppers as I don't have any in my fridge.
2)I didn't sprinkle black pepper because :
2a. Hubs is allergic to it. Whenever he eats black pepper,
he will pay frequent visits to the loo, so I didn't dare add it in.
2b. Hawra ate the pasta with us.

But even without the red bell peppers & black peppers,
it is still delicious and flavorful. The dish didn't disappoint us at all.
Looks like Sea Creatures & Mushrooms Aglio Olio is here to stay!

For those who are curious about this recipe, you can ask for it from Delina herself. *promote sikit. hehehe*

So, Delina dear, go open a cooking blog now! I will always be your tukang test resipi. *grins*

:: Sambal Tumis Telur Pecah ::

For sambal freaks lovers like me & Hubs.

Don't let the looks deceive u.
It may look ugly, or not appetizing, but it tastes Mmm..Mmm..good!
This recipe is very easy to cook, but as you can see, Anne, I myself can always screw up a simple recipe. *wink*
Usually it turned out fine, but this time round, it's too oily. Even Hubs complained. Oh well, sorry! ^_^

Basically, it's the usual sambal tumis recipe, only that u poach the eggs directly into the sambal, let it cook for a little while & just stir the eggs a bit to create that 'pecah' effect.

Thank you, Hubs, for garnishing this otherwise plain-red dish with cucumber & tomato slices before snapping this pic and then devouring it.

Oh...poor Hawra. It was a torture for her, watching us eat this very-red-food.
member sampai telan air liur..heh heh

Sorry honey, but you have to stick to your 'healthy-baby-food' for the time being, ok Darling? lol

:: Savoury Soup for the SouL ::

Hawra's upper teeth are emerging, so she's quite the grumpy girl nowadays.
As a result, she lost her appetite for food.
I was racking my brains out on what I should cook for her (without clashing with Hubs' appetite) today, and this is what I came up with.

//Engku Endau's 'Sup Ikan Gentel'//

This recipe was from our beloved Atok, almarhumah Engku Endau who passed away on my birthday in year 2002.
She taught me this recipe a few years back, when I recently married my dearest Hubs.
This 'ikan gentel' is far much more delicious, more fresh ( and healthier, if I might add) than those ready-made fishballs.

I don't stick to one type of fish for this recipe. Sometimes it would be ikan parang (a bit painstaking, have to remove all the bones- but the taste, masyaAllah..heavenly!), sometimes it would be red snapper (ikan merah), treadfin (ikan kurau), seabass (siakap), tenggiri (not sure what u call it in english, mackarel ke? heh).

But last night, I tried something new. Well, actually I am one lazy housewife to want to de-bone any type of fish no matter how easy it is. So, I bought Dory fillets. (Betul punya pemalassss mak kau ni, Hawra!)

Oh, in case some of you were wondering, you can prepare the fishballs paste overnight, or you can just prepare it straightaway. In my lazy state case, I prepared it last night so that I wouldn't have to rush and prepare everything today.

This is how the paste looks like.

Oh, do note that you have to pat dry the fillets with kitchen towels to absorb excess water before you dump it in the food processor/blender/or whatever it is you're using to blend it, so that you could form the fishballs easily without it sticking to your fingers.

Please ignore the chef's pudgy fingers. kwakwakwa

Bring the soup to boil before adding in the balls.

Once the balls float, turn off the heat, and serve with plain rice, noodles, macaroni.

So, what does my darling Hawra think of lunch today?

You should've cooked this for me aaaages ago. Mummy!
I'M LOVIN' IT!!!

*Do drop me an email if you're interested in this recipe.
I won't bite, I promise :)

:: Smack that lazy butt ::

Today is the grandmother of laaazzeeee days fer me.

I was in no mood to cook. The reason being, Hubs will be home late. He has 3 hotels to inspect, and God knows what time he will be back tonite.

Thankfully, I have Hawra to keep me company. If it weren't for her, I would now be singing..

Lonely..I'm Mrs. lonely..I Have Nobody...All on my oooOooOoowwnnn...
Who sang dat song, anyway? da lupa ah!

Hawra is quite the chatterbox, I tell you. Despite not feeling too well, she still manages to babytalk her way all day long. She made gibberish babytalk like, "kapush", "ewewe", "aperuweh"..Heck, sometimes it sounds like she's speaking French. Lol.

She gave me & Hubs quite a scare with her hot temperature 2 days ago. Refused to swallow anything, not even drink milk. Rushed her to the clinic, and the Verdict? Sore throat. Hah! So that's why she didn't want to eat or drink.

Tsk3..My poor little Angel.

Anyway, this is what I cooked today, being the typical pemalas me. Hmm..I wonder why today I feel like such a lazy bum..perhaps it's the "I Hate Mondays" bug? But wait, today is Tuesday, yes? Argh..who cares what day today is. Point is, I hate weekdays. As simple as that.

This is my all-time favorite fast-to-cook-good-to-eat dish. I did this dish almost every day when I was single. Why? Because it's simple to prepare. Oh well..that and the fact that I didn't really know any other recipes..Heh heh!

*sings* terkenang semasa duluuuUuuUu...

Ok here's what u need.

But of course, during my anak dara days, I had to prepare the spices from scratch (shallots, garlic, cili padi, a bit of ikan bilis - all blended together). Nowadays, sooo convenient! Oh the wonders of technology :). I recommend using Seri Aji's Fried Rice mix. I tried using several other brands, but it didn't taste as nice as this one :)

And of course, U will need rice. If there's leftovers from last nite's dinner, pun boleh.. Sorry lah I didn't snap a pic of the rice. But, don't tell me u're so blur that U need me to upload a pic of RICE in order for you to register in ur head how rice looks like? o_O If so, then you're even blur-er than me. kwakwakwa

Oooh n don't forget to add in Salt & Ajinomoto to taste la k..

Have fun experimenting with ingredients hokay..U can always add a variety of ingredients like shrimp, squid, beef of chicken meat! :)

expecting Hawra's cute pics?
Sorry to disappoint you all, but my Hawra was not in the mood to pose for pics today.
Tomorrow, maybe?

Time to cuddle with my beloved darling Hawra :)
Abang, care to join us?

:: Say cheese!! ::

My Hawra, she just loooooves cheese!

I discovered this a few days ago. We went to carrefour to window shop..but being the typical us, we ended up buying almost anything we could get our hands on..tsk tsk..

I seldom shop at carrefour, so had no idea at all that carrefour has its own product range. we went to the dairy dept and there it was, tons of packs of Carrefour cheddar cheese slices. I admit, i myself love eating cheese. after seeing that it was cheaper than the rest of the other leading brands (rm5.70), we decided to give it a try.

The next morning, My Hawra refused to eat her porridge. i was starting to feel frustrated when suddenly i remembered the cheese that we bought. so, i took out a slice and tried to feed her. wah...member pandai betul !! stuck out her tongue first (probably to sample whether the food i'm trying to offer is nice or not)..lepas tu agaknya dia rasa sedap..barulah she opened her mouth.. laju oii dia makan...habis 1 slice!!

since then, i've been feeding her cheese during mealtimes. but not 100% cheese ajelah.. sometimes it would be boiled eggs & cheese, mashed baked potatoes & cheese, tomatoes & cheese, mashed carrots & cheese, u name it, i prepared it..hehe

the latest recipe i made for my hawra :

Broccoli+tomatoes & cheese.

i think this is the dish that hawra loves most (for the time being lah).

to all u mommies who'd like to try this recipe, be my guest. i'm sure ur little one will love it. I'm sure they'll love eating veggies in no time..hehe!

ingredients :
1 knob butter
1/2 a tomato (finely diced)
a dash of milk
broccoli (boiled & mashed-u can use a food processor, but i just mashed em using a fork)
1 slice of cheddar cheese

ok, 1st u melt the butter on a low heat, then add in the diced tomatoes and sautee.
in a bowl, mash the broccoli.
when the tomatoes are cooked, add in a dash of milk, stir. turn off the heat.
add the tomatoes into the bowl of mashed broccoli. Add in the cheese. stir until cheese melt.

And it's ready!!

oh...here's a pic of the dish i managed to snap before hawra finished the whole bowl!

Broccoli & Cheese

Have fun!
